Vintage Qing Dynasty Puffy Spirit Lock Butterfly Pendant-
Spirit Locks are pendants worn by the Hmong and Akha hill tribe people of Thailand, Burma and Laos. Traditionally these Padlock- esque pendants are worn around the neck often as a counter weight at the back of a neck ring. The spirit lock is believed to keep the soul, which resides within the head locked to the body. Antique Qing dynasty puffy lock pendant made of good quality coin silver. The repousse work on both sides of the pendant depict flowers and the detail of a butterfly wing.
Chinese culture regards the butterfly as a symbol of immortality, and conjugal bliss. When seen with a chrysanthemum, it symbolizes beauty in old age; and if seen with a plum, it symbolizes long life. Chinese also believe that butterfly is a symbol of grace and is associated with romanticism. Two butterflies flying together are a symbol of love.
